AWARD

The architectural world has been hit with the news of the award of the 2016 RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Gold Medal to the architect Zaha Hadid, making her the first woman architect ever to receive the prize. The news that she had won was not surprising due to Hadid’s strong standing and her extensive impact on contemporary architecture and design. She also won the prestigious Pritzker Prize back in 2004 and the Stirling Prize in 2010 and 2011.

The aim of this post is not to discuss this specific award but to use this opportunity to highlight the importance of awards in general as a catalyst of struggle, creativity, and excellence for individuals and society, especially as the Arab world generally lacks such awards. What few awards the Arab world does have have been ascribed low moral and economic status due to lack of transparency and/or professionalism.

Awards have various benefits to individuals and societies, such as:

– Awards are not simply about the evaluation of well-done accomplishments; rather, they are about encouraging individuals and/or organizations to pursue further achievements.

– Awarding and recognizing individuals and organizations helps to promote and attract talent to successful organizations.

– Awards fulfill a human need for recognition and self-actualization. Awards also help employees take pride in their work.

– Awards have economic benefits, as they enhance an awarded and nominated company’s reputation, elevate its status, and help it garner publicity, thus opening doors for new businesses.

– Awards play a large role in society, as they can build a culture of positive competition and encourage both individuals and organizations to strive for excellence. As a result, society is advanced in all areas of human activity.
